Rogers Brings First Connected Car Device to Canadian Consumers

New Device Gives Customers Safety Notifications, In-Car Wi-Fi, and Vehicle Diagnostics

TORONTO, July 19, 2017 /CNW/ - Want to make sure your teenager is driving safely to the cottage alone for the first time? Setting off on an epic cross-country road trip with the kids and need to keep them entertained? Today, Rogers launched the first solution of its kind in Canada that helps Share Everythingcustomers keep their car connected worry-free.

"Consumers are looking for more ways to stay connected wherever they are. Of the 24 million cars on Canada's roads today, over three-quarters don't have Wi-Fi or any connectivity features," said Leroy Williams, Vice-President, Rogers Communications. "We're excited to be the first carrier to introduce this kind of device to Canadians. Now, families can have peace of mind about their car maintenance and safety and can connect to the things and people they love worry-free."

With this new connected car device, Share Everything customers can:

  • Track their car's location and set alerts to monitor vehicle speed
  • Turn their car into a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Diagnose car trouble, get maintenance reminders, and be alerted of disturbances, like being hit while parked

"Our popular Share Everything plans just got better," added Williams. "Now, customers can access information about their car and family member location right at their fingertips no matter where they are. By simply checking the Rogers Smart Drive app, they can know their elderly parent is getting safely to the grocery store or why the 'check engine' light turned on. This is the ultimate connected experience for your car."

Built by ZTE and powered by Mojio's open platform for connected cars, the Rogers Smart Drive device is compatible with most vehicles built after 1996 and simply plugs into the car's On Board Diagnostic (OBD-II) port. Customers can purchase the device for $99 on a two-year term and add it to their Share Everything plan for $15/month, plus they get a 1 GB bonus of shareable data for 12 months.

Rogers Media Expands CityNews Across Canada

– In addition to Toronto, the award-winning local news broadcast will now serve viewers in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal

TORONTO, June 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Building on its commitment to deliver more local news to even more Canadians, Rogers Media will expand its award-winning news program, CityNews, across Canada, beginning September 4. Currently seen in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, the expansion of CityNews will now include local versions of CityNews produced locally and airing daily on City, in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

The one-hour newscasts will broadcast seven days a week with CityNews at Six at 6 p.m., and CityNews Tonight at 11 p.m. local time. Newscasts in Edmonton and Winnipeg will debut Monday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. local time.  CityNews will expand into the Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary markets in Winter 2018.

"CityNews's fresh and innovative approach to news reporting resonates strongly with younger viewers, with CityNews at Six – which we revitalized over the last 18 months – now ranking number one in Toronto among the coveted 18 to 34 adult demo*," said Dave Budge, Vice President, News and Information, Television, Rogers Media.  "It's a winning format that connects with today's viewer, and we're excited to bring the same authentic local approach to new audiences.

Debuting in Toronto in 1975, the multi-award winning CityNews has been globally recognized as a trailblazer for news innovation, earning accolades for its local coverage including the esteemed RTDNA National Bert Cannings Award for Best TV Newscast in a Large Market in 2016. Late last month, CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan won the national RTDNA Adrienne Clarkson Award for Diversity in Reporting for her in-depth series on Danica Rain – a transgender Ontario woman who underwent gender reassignment surgery at a clinic in Bangkok.

"Staying true to the hard-hitting journalism that CityNews is known for, the content will focus on viewer-driven, original stories introduced by local reporters," added Budge.

Adding regional and national perspectives, complementary stories from Rogers Media's sister brands such as Maclean's, Breakfast Television, and Sportsnet will also be featured in the broadcasts. Viewers will also see news content delivered across all platforms, with each CityNews team engaging with audiences through their respective local websites and social media channels.

Additional programming details and on-air news talent will be announced in the coming months.

Rogers Improves Wireless Service in Kelowna, City of West Kelowna, and Westbank First Nations

Rogers Improves Wireless Service in Kelowna, City of West Kelowna, and Westbank First Nations

Two new towers in Kelowna area provide increased wireless coverage for Rogers and Fido customers

VANCOUVER, April 4, 2017 /CNW/ - Rogers today announced it has expanded wireless service near Mount Boucherie and Upper Okanagan Mission, making it easier for Rogers and Fido customers to use maps to navigate the Lakeshore Wine Route, share a photo from the bleachers of Jim Lind Arena, or make a call from West Kelowna City Hall.

"We're investing in our wireless network to make sure our customers have access to our world-class LTE service in more places," said Perm Jawanda, Vice-President, Partner Retail Sales, Rogers Communications. "Whether you live in Kelowna or are in town to tour the city's famous wineries or catch a hockey game, our customers want to be able to connect with the people and things that matter to them, in more places. As communities in the B.C interior keep growing, we're committed to continuing to improve service for our Rogers and Fido customers."

Now, residents in the growing communities around Mount Boucherie and Upper Mission in South Kelowna, as well as people visiting Royal LePage Place, Jim Lind Arena, and West Kelowna City Hall, will have more seamless access to Rogers LTE service.

"With this wireless service expansion, Rogers is investing in the Kelowna region's future as the community continues to grow," said Amrik Virk, Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services. "Whether you're a local resident or visiting on holiday, you will always be connected to your loved ones, government services, learning opportunities and the world."

"This expanded coverage is great news for Kelowna residents and for visitors to our great city," said Doug Findlater, Mayor of West Kelowna. "Families and businesses will benefit from more seamless wireless service throughout the region."

LTE, the fastest generation of wireless service in Canada, provides stronger, more consistent data speeds, similar to high speed broadband home Internet. With LTE, customers can stream and do more on the go with less buffering. The improved service also provides HD quality voice services when using a device enabled with VoLTE, the latest voice technology. In addition, Rogers has turned on 700 MHz spectrum, the beachfront real estate of spectrum, in these areas. 700 MHz spectrum provides better coverage in hard to reach places like basements, elevators and buildings with thick concrete walls, meaning customers will have a stronger LTE signal on their device and will be less likely to lose LTE coverage and drop to lower data speeds.

Rogers partners with Toronto District School Board to deliver Canada's fastest Internet[1] to local students

Rogers partners with Toronto District School Board to deliver Canada's fastest Internet[1] to local students

Pilot project will bring Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet to 20 TDSB locations at no cost
Rogers has completed world's largest DOCSIS 3.1 rollout to deliver consistently fast, more robust Internet

TORONTO, March 30, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, Rogers Communications announced a new three-year pilot program at 20 Toronto District School Board (TDSB) locations to bring students Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet, the company's fastest available speed, with unlimited data. This pilot program will deliver top Internet speeds up to 55 times faster than those currently in these TDSB locations, allowing students access to leading digital programs and classroom technologies.

"Today's classrooms are more technology driven than ever," said Dirk Woessner, President, Consumer Business Unit, Rogers Communications. "With our Gigabit speeds, students will have the connectivity to access the best online resources and tools to prepare them for today's digital economy. Like our Connected for Success Program, this is another way we're helping bridge the digital divide."

An Ontario Ministry of Education report [2] looked at the importance of accelerating digital literacy. More than 70 per cent of Ontario schools do not have the recommended minimum bandwidth capacity of 1Mbps per student to support new classroom technologies, and 90 per cent of schools have outdated and inefficient network setups.

"To help our students thrive in school and the global community, equipping them with the best tools – including the fastest Internet available today – is essential to meet the needs of our students as global learners," added Peter Singh, Chief Technology Officer, Toronto District School Board. "This Gigabit pilot will make a meaningful difference in how students access, engage with and learn through technology."

For this pilot the TDSB identified locations most urgently in need of an upgrade. With the capacity for multiple simultaneous users, and freedom from data caps and slow downloads, the pilot enables the TDSB to provide innovative programming in schools, language centres, and employment programs helping:

  • Students access online resources like virtual museums and science labs, research tools, or Google Classroom.

  • Students connect with targeted learning tools like audio books and apps to improve English literacy, fluency and numeracy.

  • Students of all ages learn about future school or career opportunities at colleges, universities, apprenticeships, or employment using tools like video conferencing.

About Rogers Ignite Internet and DOCSIS 3.1

Rogers is recognized as Canada's fastest internet based on Ookla's analysis of Speedtest data.[1]

For the school, home, or small business, speed matters and Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet is our best internet yet. At 1 Gigabit per second, it takes about 30 seconds to download a 3 GB HD video or data file whereas the same file would take about 9 minutes at a speed of 50 Mbps.

After enabling Ignite Gigabit Internet for its entire service area last year, Rogers continues to stay ahead of growing demands for speed and data capacity. Rogers is the first cable company in the world to deploy DOCSIS 3.1 cable network technology across its footprint. DOCSIS 3.1 enables more consistently fast performance for an even more robust Gigabit service and lays the foundation for new IP technologies.
